چکیده

Inherent in all empirical estimates of the geophysical model function (which relates the wind t o the normalized radar cross section, NRCS, of the ocean surface) is uncertainty caused by parameters not included in the empirical model. This can be thought of as variability in the NRCS for given wind conditions. W h e n the estimated variability is included in the max imum likelihood wind retrieval algorithm, complicated interdependencies arise between the estimated wind and the estimated variability. Techniques fo r simplifying these interdependencies results in sub-optimal wind estimates. The model function variability can be ignored, or the log-variance t e rm in the maximum likelihood estimation could be eliminated. In this paper, we consider the impact of these suggestions o n NSCAT compass simulations. As expected, each method results in biased wind estimates. However, the biases are small, particularly when compared t o the added complexity of the f i l l solution.

An Algorithm to Assess the Accuracy of NASA Scatterometer Data - Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings, 1998. IGARSS '98. 1998 IEEE International

A simple wind field model can be used to evaluate the accuracy of pointwise ambiguity removal for NASA Scatterometer (NSCAT) data. Errors in pointwise ambiguity removal result in large model-fit errors when the pointwise wind estimates are assimilated into the model. By thresholding the error, regions containing ambiguity removal error can be identified. For many of these regions, the ambiguity...

A Field-Wise Wind Retrieval Algorithm for Satellite Scatterometers - Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings, 1998. IGARSS '98. 1998 IEEE International

Traditional satellite scatterometer wind retrieval algorithms consist of point-wise wind estimation and pointwise ambiguity removal. Point-wise estimation yields multiple estimates, or ambiguities, for the average near-surface ocean wind in each scatterometer resolution element, requiring subsequent ambiguity removal. Even though some point-wise ambiguity removal techniques achieve a high skill...

Abstruct-The Tropical Rain Measuring Mission (TRMM) precipitation radar (PR) is designed to measure backscatter from rain in order to map the ;mount and extent of rain in the tropical regions. The TRMM F'R also measures the normalized radar cross section (a") of the surface at a nominal resolution of approximately 4.4 km over an incidence range of 018". Scatterometer Resolution Enhancement - Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings, 1998. IGARSS '98. 1998 IEEE International

AbsrractScatterometers can be effective for large scale monitoring of the Earth’s surface. However, their low resolution can limit the utility of the data. Thus, there is interest in resolution enhancement methods that can create high resolution imagery from scatterometer measurements. In this paper, a brief review of an iterative image reconstruction is presented, and the implications of this ...
